In this Oscar-nominated film (for Best Documentary Feature in 1990),
filmmaker Derek Bromhall examines the scientific process that turns sperm and
egg into newborn baby. With the help of Fay DeWitt's patient narration, Bromhall
explains cells, genes, and DNA strands with simple, colorful, and quite
beautiful animated graphics. Much of the rest of the processes-- ovulation,
ejaculation, fertilization, and embryonic development--is actually photographed.
From implantation in the uterine wall on the 7th day to birth 37 weeks later,
the film traces life from zygote to fetus to baby. This specially edited
27-minute version is made for family viewing, but there are brief moments of
graphic childbirth and some discussion of body parts that suggest the need for
parental supervision. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Twentysomething filmmaker Meema Spadola gathered a diverse group of
women, chose a few categories, and let them talk candidly about their breasts.
This celebration of femaleness is as (ahem) revealing as it is playful. In less
than an hour, Spadola manages to cover social, medical, and sexual aspects of
this revered female attribute, stringing together the segments with hilariously
outdated propaganda footage. This was made for HBO and suffers from budget
constraints, but is worth checking out if you happen to own a pair of breasts. --Rochelle

From its title, When a Kid Is Gay sounds like a self-help guide
for stressed-out parents of gay kids, a step-by-step program on what to do
("(1) do not panic, (2) stop panicking"). In actuality, this
sensitively but realistically made special is a testament to the strength and
determination of teens and young adults who are slowly but surely finding their
way out of the closet. Profiling a gay and lesbian youth group in Worcester,
Massachusetts, the program offers different looks at various group members who
are all dealing with different aspects of coming out: Jason is wrestling with
his religious beliefs, Chris is dealing with a hostile family environment,
Jeremy is adjusting to being out in the real world, Amy feels she can't bring
her girlfriend home to meet her parents, and such. What makes this quietly
affecting special topnotch is that these kids are real, articulate, and honest,
easy to identify with--this isn't some glossed-up Beverly Hills 90210-style
video. They're going through all the pain and pressure of coming out and
admirably wrestling with complex issues at a very young age. Kids who are just
starting to explore their sexuality would do very well to watch When a Kid Is
Gay, if only to see that the solitary experience of coming out is something
that's universally dealt with by all members of the gay community. It won't
offer any answers to specific questions, but When a Kid Is Gay does offer
courage and hope to kids who are wrestling with their homosexuality. --Mark

The film begins on a high note, celebrating gay-pride rallies of the 1990s. Starting from the present and moving backward, Wescott is determined to rouse our collective memory, detailing the struggle of lesbians to survive in a hostile world. A clear sense of urgency informs this film, echoed by Audre Lorde's potent observation: "It serves to remember." Wescott details the persecution of lesbians in 17th-century Amsterdam, where cross-dressing or "passing" was known as the "sin that cannot be named." Lesbians found guilty of this "crime" were routinely strangled, burned, or drowned. We are reminded that gays and lesbians were the first victims taken into Hitler's death camps at the onset of World War II and also the last to leave--after the war, the Allies continued to incarcerate them. Turning back to the U.S., Wescott reenacts a thriving but tenuous underground bar scene where lesbian establishments of the 1950s were busted by cops who were paid off or otherwise had their way during a time when legal protection for gays and lesbians was nonexistent. This story would not be complete, however, without detailing the glory days of lesbian culture. Wescott interweaves these highlights as a counterpoint to the horrors of persecution: Weimar, Germany, where 60 gay and lesbian cafés and bars flourished before the rise of Fascism; turn-of-the-century Paris and Gertrude Stein's salon; the Michigan Women's Music Festival; the Gay Games; and (of course) the ongoing celebration of pride.
Still, the beauty of this film lies in the women Wescott interviews. Without their firsthand accounts of coming out, surviving hate, and creating their own families, we might have sat glassy-eyed through a history lesson that, seemingly, has no direct relationship with the present. Their voices--alive and empowering--ensure our connection to the evolving story that is lesbian history. Note: This film contains brief scenes of nudity and sexual intimacy. --Katy Ankenman
